When I passed the test for my sight-seeing license in 2007, I began a job which, in so many ways, is essentially a fun adventure. I'm lucky, really, and I think that's why so many people talk about the "enthusiasm"...
Read More || Close

... and "passion" they sense when they join me on a tour.
And I hope you'll join me! Exploring the city, from the "greatest hits" to the quiet corners, is something I think I may have been born to do, but the other jobs I've done along the way have helped make my understanding of the city richer and fuller. I've worked at a hedge fund, an advertising agency, a magazine publishing house, a public relations firm, an art gallery and an art college.
My education is just as varied. I began studying politics and ended up with a BFA in photography. I followed up with an MFA in fine arts when I studied in London, UK, the one year of my life I spent away from the greater NYC area. And although one of my guests believes I "could be teaching a course on the city's history ... at the university level," other guests say my "fine arts background really added to the experience."
I'm part of five generations of my family to call Brooklyn home. Its where I live now, with my wife and sons. But I was born in Manhattan and, as a child, lived in Staten Island and later in a small town (just across the Hudson) in New Jersey. But as soon as I got old enough to set out on my own, I was back in the Big Apple.
I've done everything from sleep out at Yankee Stadium for post-season tickets, to dressing in a tux to hear the opera at the Met. I've marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade and helped unveil Christmas windows at Saks Fifth Avenue.
All these experiences help me give tours that guests call "witty" "fun" "informative" and "fascinating." It's also the reason guests say things like: "For 5 1/2 hours we did not want to miss a thing he said and more importantly, neither did our two teenagers. Now that is a feat!" and "My wife was born and raised in NYC and .. even she learned a whole bunch about a city where she spent most of her life."
I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping to plan your own adventure in this amazing city!

Jonathan is an excellent tour guide with a library of knowledge in his head for New York City. He is a genuine person with a great attitude and ability to keep your attention throughout the tour. His message at Ground Zero was both powerful and heartfelt. He is an exceptional young man. If you are in the city ... request Jonathan as your guide - you will be glad you did.

Jonathan, thank you for a wonderful day in New York!

What a wonderful time we had! Jonathan was a superb guide. He quickly perceived what we were looking for: serious history, lots of sightseeing, with a little People Magazine thrown in! He introduced us to the best Bagel I've ever had., also our first genuine NYC hot dog! He was a delight and so patient as we queried him about "Life as a Real New Yorker!"

An unforgettable trip.

I am very happy to give you a reference for Jim. He is a wonderful tour guide; his personality makes the tours so very interesting because he has so much knowledge of New York City, its residents, and its history. I travel to New York City every December with a group of 10-12 ladies and we first met Jim last year (2009) and enjoyed him so much that we hired him for a private, personalized tour of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn this year (2010). And we plan on hiring him each year from now on because we enjoy him so much and he has so much to offer. He has wonderful stories about the many celebrities of New York, and we love that he shows us many of the places where the celebrities live and where some of our favorite TV and movie scenes are filmed. And he always asks us what we would like to see and do. I have been on many tours in the U.S., Europe, Ireland, and the islands and he is by far the best tour guide I have ever had. He keeps everyone’s attention and makes it fun for everyone.

I highly recommend him to your company as a tour guide. I think you will be highly pleased with his knowledge and presentations.

"We loved the tour. It was excellent, fantastic, superb... More than a tour guide who knew juest about everything in New York, you had personality. You made it fun, engaging and educational. Thank you for a great day!"

"Cliff, it was a great day indeed. Everyone had a great time (jokes included), and I'm sure Darbi will be showing your book to all of her friends in Indiana. And thank you for joining us for lunch afterwards. Katz's wouldn't have been the same without you. If your website has room for another testimonial, count me in!"

"In searching the internet, we found Cliff Strome's agency, Custom & Private New York Tours. How fortunate for us. Cliff is a native New Yorker. After explaining our situation, he arranged a private limousine tour of New York with an excellent chauffeur and an extremely knowledgeable French-speaking guide. The tour was the highlight of our guests' visit to the U.S. Incidentally, during our initial conversation with Cliff, he recommended that we stay at the Essex House.
In summary, we highly recommend Custom & Private New York Tours."

"our clients with Dr Pepper and Coca-Cola. We wanted to offer our clients a unique tour of New York that would be informative and fun for adults as well as children. Cliff was the perfect solution!
Once the tour began, Cliff immediately developed a wonderful rapport with the group and effectively shared his extensive knowledge of New York's history. Our outing with Cliff was such a success, that we had him come back to conduct another tour for some guests who weren't able to participate in the first outing. I found Cliff to be very professional, knowledgeable and entertaining."

"Hi Cliff,
Thank you very much.
I will never forget time spent with you.
ou gave warm, inspirational experience of spending time with a friend, New York was just a stage. I am expecting your book with curiosity. Will send you photographs.

We recently returned from a family trip to New York City. My husband and I had previously visited NYC, but it was our sons' (ages 10, 13) first trip. My parents also went with us, so it was truly a family trip!
We ultimately settled on the idea of a walking tour with an experienced guide. We wanted to be able to ask questions and experience NYC without having our heads in a book as we walked! Bill was willing to tailor the trip to our interests. He was the perfect start to a wonderful trip. He was extremely knowledgeable and put a lot of effort into making it a trip that our children would enjoy as well as the adults. It was obvious that Bill has a great love for New York City. By the end of the tour, we felt ready to continue our exploration of this fascinating city. Thank you, Bill, for your wonderful guidance! We can't wait to go back!"
- Butch and Paige, Cary NC

"Bill was a fantastic tour guide with a vast knowledge of the city. He is enthusiastic and you can sense his passion for the history related to every site visited. We embarked on a six hour walking tour that included pretty much everything South of Central Park and we saw a plethora of sites we would have never seen if Bill was not leading the way. I recommend his services to anyone who wants a solid tour of the city."
- Tom

"Our weekend was fabulous! We cannot wait to do it all again! Many of our girls and their moms had never experienced New York and they all made wonderful memories.
The rooms were very comfortable and spacious; the staff at the hotel was gracious, as well. The show was outstanding! I'm leading up to my favorite part of the weekend: Bill! He is such a knowledgeable and well-spoken man. Above all, he had the utmost patience with 26 females who had to stop for Starbuck's Coffee, and then, naturally the women's bathroom! I feel like we were ' let in on' some of the treasured secrets of New York City. He, quite simply, was the best!"

To Whom it May Concern:
I hired Harvey as our tour guide for a high level international VIP incentive program. Harvey and I met a few weeks prior to discuss the 3 different tours and I was pleased with his suggestions for planning and conducting the NYC tour.
According to my client, his ability to communicate with the group, his knowledge and sense of humor were perfect. Harvey’s sense of urgency was outstanding. Upon returning to the hotel on one of the days, it had just started raining. Harvey immediately had the doorman secure umbrellas and help escort our group indoors. That type of quick thinking, care and courtesy is very important to high-level groups.
Harvey is a licensed tour guide and along with his background in the meetings industry, makes him a perfect tour guide and host.

….Hi Remo. I hope this message finds you doing well. My wife was the cancer survivor that sang “God Bless America” with you on the Staten Island ferry on the 4th of July last year. Over this past holiday week-end she, my son, daughter-in-law and I were talking about our memories of that trip and your name came up. Yes, we remember you well, along with your passion for your job and love for this country. That vacation is one of our favorites and you were a big part of it.
Carol continues to do well. The New York trip was her “I’m coming back” party and we will always remember it…..and you.
I pray for your happiness and prosperity. Godspeed.
Steve

We have just returned from our trip to America where we had a very special visit to New York. And there is reason to say "very special" because with Remo as a tour guide you get to really see and hear much more than it would be possible to read ourselves on our own or to try to see New York on our own. The man knows a great deal and says as much! He gets us first in line everywhere so that we avoid the crowds. He has quite a grip on check-in hotels and he organizes it so that everything goes smooth as can be. He knows things so well that he ensures that we get the best view, the best seats and the best route. He tells a lot about what we pass on the road while we drive the bus, and he spices it with tales of America, the American way of life New York City and also about typical life where he lives with the real life stories about his family and friends.
You get so much out of having him as a tour guide that you almost think it's impossible. He made our trip unforgettable in every respect. He is friendly, interested and helpful, whatever you ask him about. So hold on tight to him! He is priceless. With him as your tour guide you must not think that you go on "holiday" in the sense that you can sleep away the time. It is quite impossible. Every moment is interesting and fascinating.
We had a very fine trip!
Best Regards,
Elin - Denmark.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! We’ve taken guided tours all over the world, and have never met a guide as charming and knowledgeable as Mike. His presentation and command of history and insider secrets about New York went beyond our wildest expectations. We felt like we had met a long-lost relative who wanted to tell us about everything we missed by not growing up here with him. We can’t wait to come back and have Mike show us more of this great city.

We honeymooned in New York 50 years ago, and hadn’t been back since. We were a bit worried that it wouldn’t be as magical, so we arranged to cruise over on the QE2 and only spend a day in the city. Our guardian angel, Mike, tour guide extraordinaire, met us at the pier and brought back all the magic. He showed us places we remembered and wonderful new sights all over town, all the while regaling us with stories of the people that make New York special. We’re only sorry we couldn’t spend more time with him, but we’re already planning our next trip to New York, and we won’t wait so long this time. Thank you, Mike, for making our second honeymoon more memorable than the first!

Our kids, a teenage boy and girl and a 5 year old boy, wanted to go back to Disney World, but we convinced them that they’d love New York. I don’t know how he did it, but Mike managed to find special things that appealed to each of them, in addition to showing us all the regular sights in town. Now we’re all singing “I Love New York” because Mike showed us how much he loves it. The only problem is that the kids all want to move now to be with “Uncle Mike”.

"Matthew was a fabulous tour guide. He met us at the airport at the set time, took us for a combination driving/walking tour, and got us to the cruise ship terminal at the end of the tour. His knowledge of NYC enabled him to bypass traffic and work around subway station closures. We learned an incredible amount about the history and architecture of the city. It was both a fun and educational day. We would recommend Matthew to any of our friends visiting New York."

"On my first trip to New York recently, we took this tour on our first full day in the city. Our tour guide Matthew was wonderful. "Hello! My mom, sister and I took the Ground Zero/Lower Manhattan tour on Saturday September 4, 2010. Marc was our tour guide. He did a fantastic job! He knows so much and was very interesting. We had a great time and learned so much. I’ve been the NYC many times, but I have never taken a tour, so we thought we would give it a try. I will definitely try other tours after this one. This was definitely a highlight of our trip and I can’t say enough how pleased we were with Marc as a tour guide. He was awesome!! Thanks,"
Mandy

"My family and I took the Ground Zero tour on Sat April 10 with Marc. We enjoyed the tour very much. Marc knew his stuff, was able to answer all of our questions, and even gave other tidbits of interesting info not related to the specific tour we were on. There was an accident that routed car and foot traffic when we got to Ground Zero, but Marc kept walking us around until he found a spot where we could view it. When we visit NYC again in the future, will definitely look this site up for other tours. Regards,"

"My husband, John, and I returned yesterday from our trip to New York City. We learned much and had a truly enjoyable and enlightening experience thanks, in no small way, to your tour guide, Marc L. On Saturday, Marc was our guide for the Wall Street/Ground Zero tour. He is extremely knowledgeable with an encyclopedic attention to detail, cares very deeply about his City and does an outstanding job in all ways. Please convey to him again our thanks and appreciation."

"Recently I and two friends used your company for a tour of Ground Zero. Our tour guide was Marc. I cannot tell you how impressed that we were with his information regarding this site. He was by far one of the best guides that we have ever used and we have traveled extensively. I feel that someone that does their job so well deserves to be recognized--thus the reason for this letter.
Shortly after our visit in New York we boarded a Princess Cruise Ship and during this time we were very comfortable referring your company, and especially Marc, for this particular tour."
ME

"Beth, I want to say how pleased we were with EVERY aspect of our trip that was planned via NYCVP. The hotel was perfectly situated in the surroundings and was very nice, the free lunch at Planet Hollywood was great and the free dinner at the VIEW was amazing! The Walking Tour of Ground Zero could not have been better. My husband is a firefighter and was very interested in this tour and our guide Marc Landman did an outstanding job! He gave so much information and insight through the whole tour. We had a very small group --which was very nice and were able to have that personal attention on the tour. We saw Mamma Mia and had incredible seats and enjoyed the show so much! Also the 2 day ticket for the sightseeing buses gave us a chance to see all of the sites we wanted.
We will be looking forward to planning our next trip with you."

"A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to be in New York City on business. After conducting that business I had the opportunity to take a guided bus tour of the city with Grey Line. I was very impressed with the tour guides knowledge of the city. The tour he conducted was very informative. It was not an ordinary tour however, the tour guide, whose name I later found out was Joseph, not only showed the sights, but explained the history of some of the sights that I was seeing and was able to share pertinant information about what I was seeing. Things like how many windows were in the Empire State Building, the history of many of the fine places to shop in the city.
What impressed me more was that he was not a native of New York City but had only lived there a short time, but had the knowledge of someone who had lived there all there lives. At the end of the tour, I had an opportunity to have a brief conversation with him and and told him how impressed I was with the tour. He also conducted the tour like he was your best friend giving you the tour. At that time I ask him if he could do a private tour and he told me he could. I ask him if he had any kind of business card, which he did. I told him the next time I was NYC I would look him up. Unfortunately, I didn't get back until last year. I wanted to bring my wife, children and grandchildren up for a private tour. I contacted him and he graceously said he could do that for me. He gave me available dates and we agreed on a date. While we were there Joseph took us through many places of interest, Rockefeller Plaza, The Top of the Rock, Central Park, a couple of churches and a musuem. My who family was impressed with everything we saw and how Joseph conducted this tour. He conducted it in a very professional manner and we were not rushed through anything, giving us the opportunity to take in everything we saw.
I live in York PA and have given some of my friends his card and told them if they ever wanted a tour of NYC, this was the man to see. There is so much to see and we didn't get to see everything, but I know we will be going up again in the Spring and if Joseph is available we plan on see more and having him be our tour guide. My family, as was I, very impressed with Joseph's friendliness and professionalism in our tour.

... tours they have ever had. Why? It's one of the best roles I have ever played! Years ago a kid from NJ (yes, a Jersey Boy!) came to NY to pursue his dream of acting in the Big Apple. One day he was hired to guide a young group of actors from out of town to their first Broadway show. "What's it like to be an actor in NY?! You are so lucky!" They had no idea... on that day a tour guide was born!
Whether we are gazing at the most inspirational Statue the world has ever known, or reflecting on the most solemn parcel of land the world will never forget; your experience of New York City will change you. It has forever changed me. George Washington, John Lennon, Babe Ruth... They lived here, walked here, made history here. Now it's your turn. To celebrate this city and call it your own. Times Square, Central Park, Chinatown, St. Paul's Chapel. Lights, music, culture, religion. The pulse of the world beats in NYC, now it's time for you to live it!

I believe we had the best tour guide in the world in Doug
What he didn't know about the city wasn't worth knowing. The whole experience was brilliant - he entertained us solid for the whole time with such a sense of humour we never stopped laughing. a very talented guy- last year i toured Boston with a guide which made 5 hours seem 5 days, with Doug 5 hours seemed like 5 minutes. Thanks Doug for everything.

Doug an aspiring actor was amazing…
He used his talents as an off-off broadway actor, and soap actor, to do New Yorker accents and sing and dance. His account of significant events in US history, the "pay phone 9-11 story" brought many close to tears. Go see him before a sitcom snaps him up!

Doug was the BEST!!!!
My family and I were in NYC this past Saturday and it was our first time. We decided to do a tour since we have never been there. It was an all girls get-a-way and we wanted to see as much as possible! We had Doug as our tour guide and he was AMAZING! He made our tour more than we could ever have imagined! I've been on several bus tours in several different cities and although they were all good, none of them matched up to the one we had with Doug.
Thank you,
Melissa - Pittsburgh, PA

Simply put - it was amazing
Doug, our tour guide really made the trip memorable. My husband and I were only in the city for one day so had limited time to see what it had to offer. I couldn't think of a better way to tour it. The personal memories Doug shared with us about 9/11 made the world trade center site more surreal.

...should be an engaging, informative and entertaining experience that you will never forget.
I was born outside the city in the suburbs 35 miles east of the city. An early marriage and three children kept me there. I moved into Manhattan 13 years ago when my last child left the nest and began my love affair with this amazing city. When I first moved in I felt that every day living here was a gift. I still feel that way. I spent several years in Real Estate sales learning every nook and crannie of Manhattan. Then I started acting, another passion and while working on a movie set I was speaking to another actor who mentioned she was a tour guide. It was then that I decided to get my license and take my passion for New York and my love of people and combine them into a career in tour guiding. Come and learn the history of this amazing city starting with the Dutch down at Battery Park and learn how the city migrated northward.
I am also a jazz/cabaret singer and perform in various venues about the city recently appearing at The Blue Note. After one of my tours of Times Square and the history of it, one of my clients said, "I don't have to see a show now, I just saw one! Come join me as I shares my countless colorful stories of this fascinating city and use all the crayons in my box to paint the glorious landscape that is New York City.

... beauty, photography and art. I enjoy living the cultured life of New York City. My interest in music coming through growing up in the most "musical" city of Europe - Vienna - and my love of people, interest in history, languages and different cultures has also led me to travel to many far corners of the world.

And it is that combination of diverse interests and activities that allows me, I believe, to show off the current capital of the world to its best advantage.

To whom it may concern:

I have known Erika for the past ten (10) years. Erika has consistently set and adhered to the very highest standards both in her profession and in her personal life. She is an extremely intelligent individual, well educated, extremely well traveled and possesses an unbelievable amount of knowledge that would greatly enhance any office connected to the travel industry. The fact that she is multi-lingual is also a tremendous credit to her and helps attest to the fact that she never stops growing professionally nor personally in her life.

I have been very impressed over the years knowing her of her vast knowledge of New York City; her many professional contacts in the industry; she would be a tremendous credit to any office or agency.

Erika, in the ten years that we have known each other, has always been 100% consistent with her polished mannerisms and her very high sense to give her utmost attention to all details whether it be in her daily life or her professional life.

I can tell you in all honesty that I look for certain attributes in people whom I meet. Erika has lived up to every expectation one could possibly have of her. Allow me to say that I wholeheartedly recommend her for any position for which you could giver her consideration.

I had a great day with Joanna. It was a fun way to see Greenwich Village and Soho, and of course the subway. The pizza in Little Italy was fabulous!

... I would think about what it’s like to be a tour guide. This curiosity doesn’t get me into trouble; it directs me to a job I love! I worked in the food and beverage industry before working as a tour guide, and I acquired years’ experience of customer service, interpersonal skills, and the ability to anticipate people’s needs. I like to meet people and get to know them. I believe I am meant to work with people.

I have a little secret to share with you: one day I took a group of Mandarin-speaking visitors to a Chinese restaurant for lunch, and they loved the place so much, they went back for dinner the same day! Food is my passion, but not the only one.

I can show you the famous sites, landmark buildings, shops, museums, and more. You would want to take photos, and keep them forever!

Come and join me for a New York City tour!
